Before you break up and banish your summer whites to the storage closet (yes, it was only a summer fling), read this! This is the time of year where we usually ditch every white piece of clothing that we own until next spring. But is wearing white after labor day still a major fashion faux pas or has this rule been banished (gosh, I sure hope so)?!
Let’s take this back to the 1880’s when the wives of millionaires dominated high society with an iron first after the Civil War. In order to tell who was acceptable and who wasn’t, the women who were already “in” felt it necessary to create dozens of fashion rules that everyone in the know had to follow. So, from Memorial Day to Labor Day wearing white was acceptable, but wearing it anytime after that would earn you a frown and two thumbs down. Another theory was that in the 1900’s fashion magazines ruled and dictated what everyone should wear. After labor day fashion magazines such as Vogue would ditch the whites and gravitate towards darker colors, which made sense for the upcoming fall season. And that ladies and gentlemen are the theories on how this so called ”rule” was born (no one knows for sure).
Every year thousands of brides rush to the alter before labor day to get married. Is this because they are in fear of breaking the no white after labor day rule? Not sure, but these celebrities got married just in time (talk about perfect timing) right before labor day.
GABRIELLE UNION & DWYANE WADE
ASHLEE SIMPSON AND EVAN ROSS
ANGELINA JOLIE AND BRAD PITT
So, what’s the final verdict? Since every rule was meant to be broken, STOP don’t stash away your whites! Fashion editors from every major magazine and some of your favorite designers are ditching this rule and so should you! No white after labor day was so 1900’s (thank goodness)! So, ladies and gents wear your whites (okay, maybe not this week, but definitely next week….baby steps)!
Stay fashionable my friends,
Chelle
